Scripture Text : Joshua 1:1-9

The promotion that comes from God is always on time, in season and permanent.  God’s kind of promotion moves one closer to their destiny, and it is an advancement that leads to the impacting of lives.   A divine promotion has been recorded and ordained by God, and it is not a type of significant progress where it benefits just the individual and his or her immediate family.  The benefits go beyond the inner circle of the individual.    There is a reason that God chose whom he desires to receive a promotion at that appointed time, and it often happens when one is not expecting it.
Many of us are so much in a hurry to move to the next level in our careers, in ministry, etc. that we never stop to seek God’s counsel regarding his will for us.  We keep striving for that opportunity, in some cases cutting corners to get the recognition that we want and so when one is passed over for that job promotion or project, frustration and disappointment sets.   I am not saying that advancing one’s career or moving up the ladder is a bad thing it is an excellent goal to attain if you have genuinely earned it.  What I am saying is that in all things, seek God’s will first, if it is the will of God for you to move into that new position at work or a unique role in the ministry, you will surely get it.

If God’s hand is not in it and you use your power to attempt to get that promotion, it will not work, and even if you end up getting it, you may not enjoy the peace of God and the joy of the Lord. I remember not so long ago, I believed God for this position at work, it was going to be a promotion for me, I was so sure I was going to get it because of the vibes I was getting at work.  I began to pray earnestly, and I would pray inside my office, in the restroom confessing God’s word, I will pray at home, pretty much everywhere I went…. The desire to obtain that position became overwhelming, and after some time, I realized that it wasn’t the will of God.  In fact, in addition to me not receiving any word from God, I began to feel a sense of peace that just came over me ( didn’t see that coming).  It was sensing that He was pulling me in a different direction.  A  couple of months later,  the revelation came, and it was as clear as anything, it was time to go into full-time ministry, I knew it was going to happen eventually, but I was thinking maybe years down the road when my daughter would have completed high school ( my convenient time right!!!) God had a different agenda for me, the time was now!!! And so trusting God to take control of everything, I put in my resignation and launched out into the deep (stepped out in obedience) ……  He has been faithful ever since!  The promotion God had for me was much better and more rewarding than the one I was longing for.   When God calls you, He not only promotes you, but He will equip you for the work ahead just as he did with Joshua.

There is nothing as unusual as a promotion that comes directly from God, you will encounter His hand all over that promotion, and you will receive an assurance that this is from him.“For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.”  Psalm 75:6-7
Take the case of Joshua in our main scripture text, Joshua was Moses right-hand man, his assistant and when Moses died, God spoke clearly regarding the plans he has for him.  The Lord God himself anointed and commissioned Joshua to be the new leader of his people, the Israelites, hence the promotion.   Joshua's promotion was an advancement that came with the Lord’s backing and promise.  God assured him that He would never leave him nor forsake him, he will always be with him, he is not doing this alone.  All God asked of him is walk in obedience, study His word, meditate on it and trust Him.  If he can do all of this, he will be alright.  The Lord shall be with him wherever he goes.  “Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do. Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.  This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord, your God is with you wherever you go.”  Joshua 1:7-9

Joshua was a man who feared God; he was a faithful, loyal, hardworking assistant to Moses, he possessed other great qualities such as faith and boldness that easily qualified him for this position.  God could have chosen other qualified individuals among the Israelites for this critical and great task, but he decided Joshua because he earned it and his ways pleased the Lord.   Beloved, our God is always ready to promote us, to move us to the next level but you must be willing to allow Him to lead and direct your lives.  He wants the best for us, God does not want us to remain where we are, He does not like stagnancy, The Lord would like to see us grow and advance  in our careers, ministry, spiritual lives, and other areas, but to do that we need to allow him to order our steps and direct our path  (Proverbs 3:5-6) .   In His time, The Lord will bring the promotion/ the advancement.  We also need to learn to walk in obedience, learn to wait upon Him for the right timing and  He will surely do it.  Remember His type of promotion is not to fulfill our selfish desires, but it is to bless as many lives as possible.  See Joshua, he became the leader of God’s people and with God on his side, and he led the children of Israel into the promised land, how about Joseph? Another great promotion that was already ordained to happen and for a purpose.   God turned Joseph’s story around, from a slave in Egypt, he promoted him to 2nd in command to Pharaoh, and in this role, God used him to save his family, the people of Israel and the entire world at the time from a terrible famine.  When God promotes, He promotes significant.  Never settle for less, that is why it is important to seek God regarding any opportunity that comes your way to confirm if it is yours or not because the Lord may have other plans for you.  "Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you."  1 Peter 5:6-7, ESV

May the Lord grant you your heart’s desire and fulfill all your plans!
